Conditions for renunciation of Vietnamese nationality

I married a foreign national. I am living abroad. I want to acquire foreign citizenship ?

An applicant for renunciation of Vietnamese nationality may not be permitted to renounce, if he/she falls into any of the following cases:

Owing tax debts to the State or having a property obligation toward an agency, organization or individual in Vietnam;

Being prosecuted for criminal liability;

Being enforced a Vietnamese judgment or court decision;

Being held in temporary detention pending judgment enforcement;

Being enforced a decision on application of the administrative handling measure to confine to an education establishment, a medical treatment establishment or a reformatory.

A person applying for renunciation of Vietnamese nationality may not renounce Vietnamese nationality if such renunciation is detrimental to Vietnamese national interests.

Cadres, civil servants and those who are serving in Vietnamese armed forces may not renounce Vietnamese nationality.

The Government shall detail conditions for renunciation of Vietnamese nationality (Clause 2 Article 27 Law on Vietnamese Nationality No. 05/VBHN-VPQH dated 10 July 2014).

In the process of accepting, inspecting and handling the application for renunciation of Vietnamese nationality, if there is a written document notifying that the applicant is owing taxes, money, properties sent by the tax agencies or other agencies, organizations, individuals who are lawful creditors of the applicant, the competent agencies shall not accept, inspect or handle the application (Article 17 Decree No. 16/2020/ND-CP dated 03 February 2020)./.
